Isla ignorada (2016/17)

Merec_11

Ignored Island explores the identity of the Spanish lesbian community throughout the stories of women coming from different backgrounds and generations. The combination of contemporary portraits and interviews shed some additional light to a number of recurrent issues and intends to contribute to the debate in a society like ours. Spain is one of the most advanced countries in Europe with regards to the rights and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community. Nevertheless, this project questions to what extent there is a real normalization in daily life. In addition, new realities are flourishing such as motherhood in same-sex couples, which still imply a challenge.

At this stage, I have created a newspaper that contains these portraits and interviews to 20 women and a Facebook page (@ignoredisland) in order to share relevant information for the community. I also started recording video with new testimonies. In the mid-term I would like to take advantage of the current technology to create a web documentary and collect historical data, statistics and of course to continue the project with new communities in different locations and countries.

“Dearest, I feel certain that I am going mad again. I feel we can’t go through another of those terrible times. And I shan’t recover this time. I begin to hear voices, and I can’t concentrate. So I am doing what seems the best thing to do. You have given me the greatest possible happiness. You have been in every way all that anyone could be. I don’t think two people could have been happier till this terrible disease came. I can’t fight any longer. I know that I am spoiling your life, that without me you could work. And you will I know. You see I can’t even write this properly. I can’t read. What I want to say is I owe all the happiness of my life to you. You have been entirely patient with me and incredibly good. I want to say that—everybody knows it. If anybody could have saved me it would have been you. Everything has gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. I can’t go on spoiling your life any longer. I don’t think two people could have been happier than we have been. V.” Leer Más

Struthiu Camelus (2012)
